Puppet Underground Cabarets #DC

Puppet Underground cabarets bring together local and touring artists for fun, community-building evenings of puppetry and performance. Our cabarets are usually politically relevant and we try to link our puppetry with local grassroots organizing efforts.

DETAILS: Our slams have varied in form. We love doing at least one major roving cabaret each year which tends to be our biggest event of the year. We also organize some cabarets to support community groups. As a result of the different ways we use the cabaret form, the format and scheduling for each one may vary according to the purpose of each slam. For example, when one neighborhood group won the right to have live music and performance back in a local restaurant where it had been banned, we quickly organized a cabaret with local puppeteers to celebrate. Other times we are able to schedule cabarets well in advance and they are grander, have themes and are more formal. This past year some of our cabarets were organized as responses to events in DC, were more community-based and were organized quite quickly.
